If you enjoy science fiction literature you may have heard of book by the name of Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. After twenty plus years of different studios trying to make this critically acclaimed book into a movie it has finally happened. The movie will be based of the first book in the series, Ender’s Game and the first book in the “Shadow” story line, Ender’s Shadow.
For those who haven’t read the book, it is about a child genius named Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, who is a third. In the future only two children are allowed to be born due to population control by the government. Those who are born after the first two are called “Thirds” who usually have to be signed off by the government to be born. They are monitored from the day they are born and are sent to military if they prove worthy. Ender becomes a child soldier to combat the ever growing threat of the mysterious alien race called the Buggers. This is humanities last stand after two wars with the Buggers, the Earth has nearly exhausted all its resources trying to fight off the Buggers. The world needs a new type of soldier, a soldier like Ender. So the story focuses on Ender through his experience in the so called “Battle School”, a place for children to be trained to become soldiers. The second source this movie is based on is the book Ender’s Shadow which follows Bean on of the Battle School student. This book takes place before and during the events of Ender’s Game so it should fit in seamlessly with the main story.
Ender’s Game has three sequels, which are in this order: Speaker For the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind, as well numerous books taking place during the first book such as Shadow of the Giant, Shadow of the Hegemon and Ender’s Shadow. With all that out of the way lets turn our attention back to the movie. This book holds a special place in my heart so you can imagine when I heard it was finally going to be made I was both excited and skeptical. Due to many aspects of the book, I thought they might take liberties with the story. Luckily, Orson Scott Card is an Executive Producer, meaning the story should stay intact. I look forward to this movie and will in the coming future have a full review of the movie as soon as humanly possible. For now a trailer to tide you over. Remember Ender’s Game, coming November 1st
